Why Do You Smoke Cigarettes

November 10th, 2006 · 4 Comments

Cigarette advertisements support the fact that cigarette smoking can destroy your health. Cigarette smoking causes one out of every five deaths in the United States. Smoking robs more than five million years of lifespan because of premature death. Cigarette smoking accounts for the majority of lung cancer cases. So, why do people still smoke cigarettes?

Cigarette contains nicotine which is more addictive than heroine. Apart from heroine, nicotine is also listed ahead of alcohol and cocaine in terms of dependence. Research shows that smoking four cigarettes a day can induce a life-long addiction to nicotine.

Besides addiction, a smoker gains the psychological pleasure or crutch when puffing a cigarette. Smokers describe smoking as a “pat-on-the-back” after a hard day’s work. They keep on smoking not for the taste of the cigarette but more for the sense of satisfaction that they receive. Studies indicate that depression doubles in smokers as compared to non smokers. Smoking relieves them from depression.

Psychosocial factors also contribute to reasons for smoking. You tend to develop the habit of smoking When surrounded by friends and family members who smoke. Because of its addictive nature, you find it hard to quit.

Genetic variables can relate to why you smoke. Genetic variables affects you in different ways including your tendency to smoke and your chances of quitting smoking.

Even though smokers know the hazards of smoking cigarettes, the number of smokers continue to rise. The World Health Organization estimates that by year 2020, tobacco will kill more people than any single disease in the world.

Whatever your reasons to smoke, you will never justify your addiction to smoking. It’s a matter of time when smoking begins to interfere with your health. Then it will be too late to be sorry.

Good blog on quit smoking and thank you for sharing helpful information.

    Peer Pressure

    Aping
    The Feel Good Syndrome
    Stress busters
    Attitude
    Advertising

No doubt advertising played a key role in defining your image of what it meant to be a smoke - and that image was elegant, or rugged, or sexy, or all three and more. Creating a positive image for smokers has always been big business to tobacco companies.

Early on, they recognized that a person’s image of how he or she wants to be perceived could affect what brand of tobacco he or she bought. Think about the typical cigarette ad in a magazine or on a billboard.

What are some of the images these advertisements are trying to create? Do they show people coughing up their lungs or do they show people doing fun activities? How else could you get people to use such a dangerous product?

And many more reasons but one good reason to quit will work.

I would say that the same advertising is killing people now but it is for nicoteen replacement therapies.
