Irritability and Depression After Quitting Smoking

November 6th, 2006 · 1 Comment

Do you feel depressed or irritable when you try not to smoke?Smoking & Depressed

Then you can also expect these symptoms if you plan to give up smoking. When your body experiences nicotine withdrawal, you feel cranky. So, naturally depression and irritability kicks in.

Nicotine can be addictive, the same way heroin is addictive. It induces a feel-good mood. When your body starts to receive lesser nicotine, you feel a greater desire to smoke. This is your body’s way to maintain the level of nicotine in your body. Without nicotine, you feel miserable.

To counter irritability and depression, be prepared for them. Allow yourself to feel a little upset. Make an effort to treat yourself with whatever you think will cheer you up. For example,

  • Cheer up yourself by watching comedies.
  • Get together with your non-smoking friends.
  • Do light reading.
  • Grab some healthy foods. Use comfort foods sparingly as this may lead to weight gain.
  • Listen to soothing music.

Before preparing for cravings and withdrawal symptoms you should know that you do not need the cigarettes in your life. That cigarettes don’t help you in any way in your life. That you do not in need of cigarettes any more. Otherwize you will persuade yourself to smoke again.
