5 Tips To Keep Your Motivation High Enough To Quit Smoking

November 2nd, 2006 · 1 Comment

If you pick quit smoking as one of your New Year resolution, what is your motivator? Your spouse’s nagging will fail to motivate you. You must be motivated from within if you want to get off smoking.

Explore your true motivation to quit smoking. Could it be the arrival of a new baby, early signs of lung cancer, or the onset of heart disease?

Here are five suggestions to maintain your motivation especially when you are battling the challenges of quitting smoking.

  1. Get involved with other smokers who want to quit. Find a support group in your neighborhood or on the Internet. You can find forums and discussion boards that help smokers to quit. Answer questions as posted in forums. Helping others keeps you motivated to stop smoking yourself.
  2. Talk about quitting with someone you trust such as friends and family. This way you are accountable for your decision to quit smoking. They can also support you and cheer you up in times of failure.
  3. Make a chart of your progress and set small goals. In times of discouragement, look at your progress chart. See how far you’ve come and how much closer you are toward your goal.
  4. Reward yourself when you reach a goal. Go out for an evening. Buy yourself a new outfit.
  5. Keep yourself busy and take time to have fun. Don’t let your mind and body dwell on the after effects of quitting smoking.

Don’t just think about giving up smoking, start now! Most smokers postpone their plan to quit. Set your motivation right and just do it.
